Why does a baby’s eyes water: symptoms and causes
Eye care of a newborn is an important element in the hygiene of a small child. It is necessary to pay attention to it from the first days of a baby’s life. Even in the hospital, the nurse focuses on the fact that small eyes need to be wiped with boiled water once or several times a day. This is due to the fact that in infants in the corners of the eyes thick, sticky yellowish liquid accumulates. If you notice that the baby’s eyes are watering too often, you should consult a doctor.
The nasolacrimal duct connects the lacrimal ducts with the nasal cavity and serves to drain excess fluid into the nasal cavity. During intrauterine development, it is closed in a child by a thin membrane. She breaks at birth - during the first cry of the baby. Rarely it happens that this does not happen, then there is no outflow of excess tear fluid. As a result, the child's eyes will constantly water. In addition, the nasolacrimal canal of the karapuz is rather narrow, which can also contribute to its blockage and permanent tearing.
Why eyes are watery
In addition to the blockage of the nasal duct, there are other reasons for which the baby’s eyes are watering:
- viral or bacterial infections, for example, blenorrhea;
- Allergy. In this case, the eyes can still redden and swell;
- eczema caused by excessive dryness of the skin around the eyes, resulting in blepharitis;
- injuries occurring when an accidental foreign object gets into the eye, as well as when the child scratches itself;
- conjunctivitis, often infectious;
- various diseases associated with this symptom, for example, chickenpox, measles.
What will advise the doctor
The true causes of tearing can only establish a specialist. It is possible that the district pediatrician will refer you to a pediatric oculist, who will find out why the baby’s eye is watering. He will prescribe the appropriate treatment. Its nature will depend on what causes this symptom: if an allergy, then anti-allergic drugs will be used as therapy; if the infection is antibiotic or antiviral. To prevent injuries, it is necessary to cut the baby’s nails in time, wear scratches on it, and also ensure that it falls into his hands. In addition, it is important to be careful when handling the baby. In case of obstruction of the nasal duct, it may be necessary to probe it: the procedure is not very pleasant, but necessary in this situation.
When you need a massage
The doctor can give your child a massage and tell you how to do it correctly. The essence of this procedure consists in massaging the skin over the nasolacrimal canal, which as it pushes the accumulated fluid along it; and the membrane opens up the canal during light pressure. Massage is prescribed if the watery eyes of the infant due to blockage of the lacrimal canal. It is a fairly effective method that allows you to remove excess moisture. The lacrimal canal is also being developed.
