Epagnolo Breton: description, character, photo
A group of breeds of hunting dogs is content with extensive. Many of its representatives are well-known to Russian animal lovers. Epaniol Breton is still very rare in the territory of our country. This dog is famous for its magnificent hunting qualities, high intelligence, sociability and obedience.
These are universal peg dogs that can adapt not only to the owner, but also to different living conditions. Cynologists believe that the name of the breed comes from the word espagnol. At the same time, there is a version that Epaniol Breton was named after the style of their work s'espaignir (stretch, go to bed).
History of the breed
Animals, very similar in appearance to modern epanioles, appeared in the 15th century in France. Since the XVII century, images of such dogs have often appeared on tapestries and paintings by famous masters, for example, on the canvases of Dutchman Jan Wall.
Until 1850, these dogs were not called Epaniol Breton. Rev. Davies, describing the hunt with the dogs, reminiscent of the pointer, noted that they had longer wool and a short tail. These dogs did an excellent job of striking, quickly brought prey and were surprisingly obedient.
For the first time Breton epaniol was officially presented at the exhibition in 1896. The first representative of the breed, who appeared before the general public, was a wonderful dog named Pincon Royal. Its owner was the viscount from Brittany de Comboug. The breed club began its work in 1907 in Brittany. In September of the same year, the first breed standard was introduced. Today, these are the most popular hunting dogs (they are published in cynological publications) in the USA and Europe.
Characteristics of the breed
These cute animals are the smallest among French long-haired cops. Epagnolo Breton is described as a dog stocky, strong and at the same time very elegant. Growth at the withers from 50 cm (male) to 49 cm (bitches). Weight, respectively, 14-18 kg.
The head of the dog has the right shape, in front and at the sides the skull is slightly rounded. The transition from the forehead to the muzzle is quite smooth. The muzzle is straight. The nose of the nose harmonizes in color with the color of the animal, wide. Eyes large, round and slightly elongated, very expressive. Color usually corresponds to color, but is preferable to dark, although other colors are not considered a defect. Ears are triangular in shape, movable, arranged high, of medium length. Partially they are covered with soft wavy hair.
The neck is muscular, of medium length. Withers are not very prominent, mobile. The wide chest is lowered to the top of the elbow. The abdomen is tightened. The tail is set high. Epagnolo brethons are born without a tail or with a very short tail. The standard prescribes its length not more than 10 cm, ideal is 3-6 cm.
The hind and forelegs are vertical, with strong and flexible joints. Thighs muscular, wide. The drumstick is noticeably longer than the thigh.
The wool of Breton is slightly wavy, thin. Color is allowed white with spots of chestnut, black or red color. Sometimes there are speckles on the lips, limbs, muzzle. Almost all colors have a bright narrow band on their head.
All deviations from these requirements are defects (defects). Their severity is assessed in proportion to the severity of the deviations, as well as their impact on the well-being and health of the animal. Disqualifying defects are:
- a character defect (the dog is aggressive towards other animals and to the person by biting);
- dimensions other than the standard;
- converging lines of muzzle and skull;
- excessive diversity;
- white patches on the ears or around the eyes. bright, multicolored eyes;
- ectropy and entropy;
- undershot or undershot mouth;
- depigmentation on the eyelids or nose.
The Breton epaniol is predisposed to the following diseases:
- (CHD) - hip dysplasia;
- dysplasia of elbow joints;
- lupus erythematosus (chronic);
- ear infections.
The Breton epaniol is a balanced, intelligent and very kind dog. She likes to please the owner. Her character is reflected in an intelligent and welcoming look. Hunting dogs, photos of which can be seen in magazines for animal lovers, are generally very smart, and the Breton, according to the owners, just do not know how to talk.
This shrewd dog is always very skillfully using the slightest weaknesses of the owner, surprising with ingenuity. Epagnol does not show aggression towards strangers. He is friendly and plays with children with pleasure, especially if the dog has grown with them since childhood.
The abundance of energy, the passion for hunting, the availability of vitality and sociability - this is the Breton epaniol. These are very communicative creatures, able to make friends with both the dog and the cat. This dog can become not only a great assistant to the hunter, but also a sensitive companion and pet. The dog has absolutely no smell of dog. Even after returning from the marshes (having cleansed the fur on its own), you can spend the night with you in a tent, and you will not feel any smell.
Probably, someone will consider the portrait of the Breton epanioles described by us too idyllic. But it should be borne in mind that this pretty animal is endowed with a fairly solid character, at some point the dog can show obstinacy.
The puppies of the Breton from the earliest age should understand who is the leader for whom the word is law. The kid should know what to do, and what can not under any circumstances. Education puppy requires the owner of patience and perseverance. Without offending the animal, without rudeness, but firmly and decisively, it is necessary to stop all attempts at disobedience that may occur during adolescence.
Today in the territory of Russia officially registered about twenty dogs of this breed. All adult individuals work fine, the hosts are delighted with their four-legged assistants.
As we have already said, Epaniol Breton - the dog is attentive and intelligent. She has an excellent instinct, excellently imports game (including cold water), makes a long stand. The manner of her work in the field resembles a setter (at dusk, without knowing that it is an epaniol, you probably say that it is a setter, but without a tail).
However, there are also differences: the epagnol actively manifests itself in any terrain. Breton is an excellent climber, so in mountainous areas this dog is irreplaceable. When hunting passes in high grass, in the process of searching the epaniol resembles an indefatigable hare - on the run it constantly jumps up, and therefore the hunter never loses sight of it.
In a dense underbrush, the dog is also not lost. She hangs a bell around her neck. As soon as it subsides, the dog is in the rack. Puppies from 4-5 months show a passion for hunting and demonstrate excellent working qualities. Dogs are perfectly amenable to training. The animal needs a lot of physical activity to always be in shape, so it is advisable to use it as a hunting dog. Today it is the most popular hunting dog in the world.
Maintenance and care
Breton should be regularly bathed and brushed. If the dog is used as a hunting dog, it is necessary to expel worms more than twice, than in companion dogs (every six weeks).
Plant seeds can cause skin problems, so check your pet's paws regularly. Do not forget that this breed is bred for hunting birds. This she does, if there is such an opportunity. But if the epagnols grow with other animals, they do not see in them the object of hunting, so the instinct must be developed. This animal is suitable only for active owners. It is advisable to keep a dog in a country house or in a rural area. It is possible to keep it in the city apartment, provided there are places for walking with a spacious sports ground and long walks. And one more important nuance. This dog is extremely emotional and sensitive, therefore in the house peace and harmony should reign.
