A true Russian not heard the proverb? Probably these few. And how many Proverbs there is a variety about family ties, and it's difficult to count. Why are only famous sparkling statements about the relationship between mother-in-law and son-in-law, so widely used by people in comical situations. For example, "brother-in-law on the threshold, mother-in-law eggs", "our zyatey many austere", "mother-in-law for son-in-law and stupa milks", "say mother-in-law – hell, and mother-in-law is a treasure". As, probably, many already have guessed, today we will talk about a man called son-in-law, who is he, what is his place in the family.
The relevance of the question
Despite the seeming simplicity of the term, some, including the young of our contemporaries, the word "son" may seem unfamiliar and obscure in meaning, despite its widespread use. Son-in-law – who is it?
If you pay attention to the pronunciation of a word, related cognate term can be considered the verb "to know". In the etymological relation of many languages, including old Church Slavonic, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovenian, Czech, the word "son" the translation is unambiguous. Literally it means "groom". From Greek the term translated as "relative, brother". There are also such unusual words containing a common root that indicates a certain relationship to the reference term, such as zyatev, satni, sattva, patitsa, most likely used in the vernacular or in the literature describing people's traditions and customs of Russian villages, describing the originality and peculiarity of the Russian language.
The meaning of the term
Returning to the modern meaning assigned to the word, i.e. simply figuring out the son-in-law — who is a relation, it is possible to understand that, historically, it was a fiancé or husband, the daughters, sisters or nieces, and any man who becomes a family member after marriage. Mom and dad of the wife become mother-in-law and father-in-law, brother – in-law and sister-in-law – sister-in-law.
History and customs
Despite modern ideas about family relationships, initially in the old days in Russia, as well as existing to this day in remote rural heartland and the settlements, the figure of the son-in-law was considered to be quite influential and revered.
