Wolf Dog of Sarlos: description, character, photos and reviews of dog breeders
This dog appeared in the Netherlands in 1925 after crossing a purebred German shepherd with a wolf. Lander Sarlos was involved in the breeding of the breed, and after his death the case was continued by his wife and daughter.
Wolf's dog Sarlosa mostly lives in his homeland - in the Netherlands. In other countries, it is little known. Today it is successfully used as guides for people deprived of sight, for work in extreme search and rescue operations.
Probably, the wolf instincts of behavior hinder the wide distribution of these animals. This dog lives in accordance with the laws of the pack. Its owner is the leader. What is surprising - it is not necessary to prove the dog somehow. It takes such a position as a given.
The wolf dog of Sarlos, the photo of which we have placed in our article, as a rule, keeps at a distance from people she does not know, avoids everything that seems suspicious to her.
History of the breed
As already mentioned, L. Sarlos, a citizen of the Netherlands, took up the breeding of this breed. This work he devoted 39 years of his life. The first experiments he started in 1925, trying to get a shepherd, which would be endowed with features close to natural, natural. He crossed wolves with German shepherds, selected the most desirable, in his opinion, colors.
The breeder's task was to get the most hardy and strong dogs, without any obvious signs of degeneration. In the breeding work on breeding the rock, Sarlos was assisted by his close friend - Dr. A. Hagedorn. The first experiment (1925) did not give the desired result. Repeated wolf blood was applied only in 1962.
After the death of Lander Sarlos, the wife and daughter continued to improve the breed. A few years later she was officially recognized as a cynological Dutch club. In 1981, the wolf's dog was registered in the FCI.
Many experts consider the main advantage of this dog its somewhat rustic, often wild appearance. A magnificent "wolf's head" with a slightly extended muzzle, triangular, high-set ears, slightly slanting, but very attentive eyes of amber color - you must agree, such a wolf dog can attract attention. This beauty with muscular and slightly dry limbs is really very reminiscent of a wolf - perfectly developed, sleek, ready for long transitions, having a high running speed.
The wolf dog moves as easily as its wild ancestor - broadly and smoothly. A strong animal easily passes from one pace of running to another.
The height at the withers of dogs is 75 cm. The bitches are slightly lower (70 cm). Weight is not more than 41 kg.
The body is proportional, its length is slightly larger than the height of the dog at the withers. Males are somewhat larger and more powerful than bitches.
In the forehead area the skull is flat and wide, slightly rounded between the ears, tapers in the form of a cone towards the nose. Cheekbones well developed, flat. The occipital crest obviously does not stand out. Smooth and soft transition from forehead to well-filled muzzle. It should not be pointed. The nose is brown or black (preferable), large and wide. Lips tightly fitting. Teeth are sharp and powerful.
Elongated, almond-shaped, not too large, slightly slanting, amber-yellow in color, with an attentive expression.
Triangular, dense, high set. At the base wider, the ends are pointed. They are covered on both sides with thick wool.
Broad and powerful thorax, rounded ribs. Strong and straight back, loins muscular, slightly inclined croup. The blades are set obliquely.
Forelegs are tall, slender, paws are deployed to the sides. The hind legs are well defined. Oval-shaped paws, in a lump, with slightly curved fingers, elastic, firm pads.
Planted low, at rest - it has the shape of a saber, it moves up when moving, but it does not have to be mobile.
Wolf's dog Sarlos, whose photo can be seen in some cynological publications, has an original coat that can vary depending on the season.
In the winter, the animal has a thick undercoat. Together with the coarse hair, a coat of wool is formed on the dog's trunk, and a thick collar is formed on the neck.
In the spring-summer season, the core hair becomes the main one. In the autumn-winter period, air temperature can affect the presence of undercoat, but it is important that the propensity for its appearance was always.
The dog of Sarlos has the temperament of a wolf, smoothed by a German shepherd. This animal, which quickly wilds, it is unbalanced, prone to vagrancy. From the wolf she got the hunting instincts - agility when hunting small game. A dog needs space and daily serious physical activity. Thanks to the luxurious "coat" she can live on the street at any time of the year.
A wolf dog is an independent being, but at the same time it is very attached to people. This combination of qualities often makes learning difficult.
Cautious behavior towards outsiders is not due to timidity or fear. A wolf dog, whose photo can be viewed on the sites of famous nurseries, is careful, keeps at a distance that allows it to retreat when a threat arises. This is the typical behavior of a wolf. However, it never shows undue aggression.
Features of Education
The socialization and upbringing of this animal must begin from the moment when puppies appear in the house. A wolf dog from an early age should get used to the environment, the new owners. If the puppy is afraid of something, the owner should not show sympathy for him - this will only aggravate the situation. It is necessary to remain calm - this will convince the baby in safety, help to gain confidence in their abilities.
If there are more than one wolf dog of Sarlos in the house, but several individuals, then relations between them are established fairly quickly according to the hierarchy, and they are friendly to each other.
Especially active are wolf dogs in the mating season. At this time for them there are no barriers, so when the owner is not in the house, they must be closed in secure premises.
I must say that breeding animals of this breed is not an easy task. At the bitch usually the first heat comes at the age of two years, then it repeats no more often than once a year. Some males exert "attention signs" to certain bitches, while stubbornly ignoring others.
The dog Sarlosa can drastically change behavior in different situations - from complete indifference to an unexpected revival.
The wolf dog of Sarlos can become a reliable friend of all family members. True, it should be noted that it is more difficult to achieve this than with other breeds of dogs. Their upbringing can take much longer than the host suggests.
Do not forget about how capricious the wolf dog of Sarlos. Puppies during training can, at the command of the owner, bring the required item twice, and the third time they can simply refuse to execute the command.
Despite the fact that there is usually good contact between this dog and a man, it seems that she never forgets her nature. Therefore, those who want to make a wolf dog, you must have patience.
Maintenance and care
It is not difficult to keep such a dog. Some kind of complex care for her hair is usually not required. Animals are quite comfortable in a spacious aviary. Preferred group content. Do not forget that the wolf dog of Sarlos (the owners' reviews confirm this) is quickly wild, has a tendency to vagrancy. Not getting proper education and attention from the person, they turn into an ordinary wolf pack. And this, as you understand, can lead to many troubles.
Choosing a puppy
As already mentioned, this breed is not very common in Russia - the wolf dog of Sarlos. Kennel, engaged in breeding this breed, there is not in every city. Nevertheless, if you are determined to have such a dog, it is highly recommended to purchase it only in the nursery (St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Petrozavodsk, Rostov-on-Don, Moscow). This is a dog (the wolf dog of Sarlos), whose puppies (especially at an early age) should not be bought on the market. You can get an unhealthy animal and besides having no relation to this breed.
Puppies, of course, need early socialization and upbringing, but it is equally important to teach them to behave properly alone. Otherwise, in the absence of the owner, they will yearn and tear at him, killing everything in their path.
Good results in this difficult task will be achieved only by a stubborn and patient person. Classes should be interesting to your pet. A long repetition of the same teams quickly wearies the animal.
Try to keep the training regular and often wear the form of the game (especially this is important in the early stages of training).
Wolf Dog of Sarlos: reviews of the owners
Today in our country there are not too many owners of these animals. Nevertheless, reviews about this breed already appear on the sites of nurseries and clubs.
According to the majority of the owners of these dogs, this breed will not suit every person. It should not start newcomers in dog breeding, people with too mild character. But with the proper upbringing of a nice "wolf cub" you can grow a beautiful and loyal friend.
