Pyometra in cats: causes, symptoms, therapy in this state
Quite often both in cats and dogs there is a pathological condition - a pyometra. What is it? This is the term purulent endometritis, that is, the inflammation of the uterine mucosa.
Why there is a pyometra in cats
Usually this occurs against the background of the glandular-cystic hyperplasia of the epithelium of this reproductive organ. A piometer can be the result of a true or false pregnancy, when the hormonal background in the body is represented by progesterone. It has a specific effect on the uterine mucosa, reduces local immune defense, causing the growth of the epithelium. Also, the predominance of this hormone leads to a decrease in contractility of the muscular membrane of the uterus, causes an expansion of its neck, which opens access to vaginal microorganisms.
Previously it was believed that the pyometra in cats is much less likely than in dogs, since the first ovulation is induced by sexual intercourse and, in the absence of such, does not arise. However, modern studies show that they also have spontaneous ovulation.
It is also believed that improper or excessive use of drugs to stop (suppress) estrus can serve as a cause of purulent inflammation of the uterus.
Symptoms with pyometra in cats
Animals of elderly and middle age are usually sick. However, it can also be young. A pyometra in a cat manifests itself as a general oppression, a fever may increase, an appetite is either not altered or reduced. But thirst, on the contrary, is increasing. The abdomen is enlarged, the animal can urinate more often, vomiting and diarrhea are not ruled out. In advanced cases because of the greatly enlarged uterus, which presses on all internal organs, dyspnea occurs. Allocations may be present if the cervix is open. However, cats are very clean and the owner can not notice it. When the form is closed, pus accumulates inside the reproductive organ and there will be no discharge.
Approximately the same clinical picture is characterized by a pyometra in dogs. Symptoms they usually occur after a lapse of two months after estrus.
How to make a diagnosis
In addition to analyzing clinical data, blood tests are performed in which signs of acute inflammation in the body are found. If there are secretions, then they are sent to establish the presence and nature of microflora. Also perform ultrasound of the uterus or an x-ray of the abdomen.
How is a pyometra treated in cats?
It is necessary to deliver the pet to the vet clinic, because the pathology is serious, and in the absence of therapy it is fraught with serious conditions threatening life. Do not engage in self-diagnosis and treatment.
There are both conservative and surgical therapies. At the first appoint prostaglandins and antibiotics. Such treatment is shown only to young animals that are in good physical shape, do not suffer from asthma, do not have a history of the pathological consequences of childbirth. Conduct it for several days to cats, to whom it is important to preserve the ability to reproduce. The goal is to open the cervix, cut the uterus and clean it. If this does not happen within five to seven days, or at any time when the pet becomes worse, an operation is performed. Surgical treatment is preferable, because it allows to solve the problem. Carry out removal of the uterus and both ovaries - ovariohysterectomy.
