Ragdoll kittens: breed description, character traits and reviews
Ragdoll is a breed of cats, which is still quite rare in our country, since it was bred only in the middle of the last century. The main trump card breeders of these animals is the fact that they somehow managed to achieve an extraordinary relaxation of muscle tone, completely unattainable to other breeds. In addition, Ragdoll kittens have a very soft and docile nature, and adults - complete equanimity.
The ancestor of the Ragdoll breed is an Angora cat named Josephine. She lived with her mistress Ann Baker in the 60s of the last century in California. Once the owner of the animal noticed that her pet has interesting features, consisting in an unusual muscle slackness and a fairly low pain threshold. These facts prompted Ann to the decision to create a new breed.
First of all, she found a couple for Josephine, a beautiful and calm Burma cat. The results of the work exceeded all expectations. According to Anne Baker herself, the first Ragdoll kittens turned out just perfect. In 1965, this breed was officially recognized by the California Association of Cat Lovers. Currently, there are American and European regdoll branches.
It is impossible to say that these cats were giants, but still they are larger than most breeds. Reggall females weigh from 4 to 6, and males weigh up to 9 kg. The shape of the head is wedge-shaped and wide. The eyes are oval, large and have only blue color of varying intensity. The length of the hair is medium or long, very soft and looks like a rabbit fur coat. It is loosely attached to the body of the animal, so even when walking it starts moving. The longest hair grows on the neck, forming a very beautiful and pronounced collar. On the front legs, it is noticeably shorter, but on the back - it looks like a "pants".
The ears of a regdoll are medium in size, slightly rounded, sometimes with small tassels on the tips. As a rule, they are slightly bent forward, and their inside is covered with not very long hair.
The body is rather massive with a broad and well-developed chest. The body is long and muscular. There may be a slightly saggy belly. Limbs strong and muscular. The paws are large, oval-shaped, and between the fingers are tufts of wool. The front limbs of these cats are slightly shorter than the hind ones, therefore the back line is noticeably elevated to the rump.
There are three main varieties of this breed. The first one is color points. This color is very similar to Siamese cats, whose hair on the body is light, and ears, muzzle, tail and paws are dark. A Burmese cat has a similar appearance. Ragdoll, whose kittens are born of the same color, as they grow, acquire their true color.
The next variety - the so-called mitted - differs from the previous white wool on the paws, forming a kind of "socks". And the last color is bicolor. This type differs from cats with dark paws in that they have on the muzzle a characteristic area with white wool in the form of an inverted English letter V. As for pigmentation, it begins with cheeks and eyes. Paws in such animals should be only white.
Wool in each variety of Ragdoll has 4 colors: dark brown (Seal), blue, chocolate and purple. Now only bicoloured individuals of this breed can take part in exhibitions, while the rest are still unrecognized.
Not only Ragdoll kittens, but already adult animals are very sociable, obedient and affectionate. It is rather difficult to endure loneliness, therefore, as soon as such an opportunity arises, they accompany their master everywhere. Ragdolls are often overly gullible. These cats are very intelligent and easy to train, but sometimes allow themselves to shirk from the execution of commands.
Many breeders believe that this breed is not suitable for families with small children, as it is known that kids love not only to stroke, but also to cuddle a cute fluffy animal. Given the low pain threshold of these cats, such treatment can lead to serious injury to the animal.
Despite the fact that these animals are calm and rather lazy by nature, not only Ragdoll kittens, but also adults sometimes love to frolic, showing all the agility and quickness of movements inherent in other cat breeds. However, they have one major drawback - they do not jump. It is because of this feature, experts recommend very careful attitude to Ragdolls - in no case can not push or throw them from a height. The fact is that, unlike other cats, they, due to their physical and genetic characteristics, cannot quickly group themselves, so a fall can turn into a serious injury for an animal in the form of bruises or fractures. You can feel the extraordinary relaxation of the Ragdoll muscles simply by taking the cat in your arms - it almost loses its shape, hanging on you like a rag doll.
None of the cat breeds feels more comfortable in the confined space of small apartments, like ragdoll. Kittens, and adults, require a lot of attention to themselves during street walks, as their inhibited reaction can lead to injuries and other accidents. In order to avoid undesirable consequences and to secure your pet as much as possible, special leashes, to which the randolls very quickly get used, will fit perfectly.
The hair of this breed does not have undercoat, so it never goes astray in mats. Based on this, two combing a week will be enough to remove the already dead hairs. It is necessary to bathe a pet only as it is polluted.
Almost all of the representatives of this breed love to eat well, but at the same time they never suffer from obesity. Tip: in order to prevent the appearance of hair lumps in the cat's intestines, contributing to its clogging, it is necessary from time to time to add to the food means, splitting wool. There is also a special food, which already includes "solvents".
Ragdolls are mainly distinguished by good health and good stamina, but they have one intrabreeding disease - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, when an animal may suddenly die without any prior signs of the disease.
In order to prevent such cases, it is necessary to periodically examine your pet with a veterinarian with mandatory additional studies, such as a cardiogram, an ultrasound scan, etc. It should be noted that abroad animals with such a disease are not allowed to breed at all in order to minimize the appearance of kittens with heart disease.
Be careful, fake!
Not only in our country, but also abroad, two breeds are often confused - burma and ragdoll. Kittens of the second one are born exclusively white, and colored areas on the fur appear as the animal matures. These cats are in many ways similar to the Burmese, however, given their physiological and genetic features, they can still be distinguished from representatives of other breeds.
This scam is often used by scammers, so you need to be very careful when you buy Ragdoll kittens. A nursery engaged in the distribution of these animals must also be officially registered in the club of fans of this breed. According to the existing rules, the direct descendants of the cat Josephine must be involved in the breeding of ragdolls. In addition, the nursery must receive a special permit from his club to cross, since only he has at his disposal the true ancestor of this breed.
How much are Ragdoll kittens
As mentioned above, there are very few such animals in our country. Sometimes, under their guise, they can sell another cat, posing as a real ragdoll. Kittens whose price does not exceed 2 thousand rubles - frank deception. The cost of animals of this breed depends on several factors, the main of which are pedigree, age, exterior and health.
In order to clarify how much a Ragdoll kitten costs, it is necessary to contact a reputable cattery that has official registration. Now the prices for such pet-class animals, i.e. the cheapest, ranging from 15 to 40 thousand rubles. Cats of a higher class will cost much more.
Some Ragdoll breeders offer to buy animals at lower prices - from 5 thousand rubles, but without documents. At the same time, they assure that their kittens are received from pedigreed parents. In addition, offers can also come from private (unregistered) breeders who sell animals at a price of 2.5 thousand rubles or more. Before you buy such an inexpensive kitten, you should know that in this case the risk of getting a fake animal instead of a purebred animal is very high. Therefore, it is better to purchase ragdolls in officially registered kennels.
