Animals and child
Almost all children are asked to have a pet. Often such requests appear even if the pet is already in the house. Can pets and baby get along under one roof? Which pet is better to choose as a gift to your beloved son / daughter?
How to prepare a pet for replenishment in the family?
Many young couples first start a dog, a cat or a fish, and only after they are puzzled by the appearance of their own offspring. Having learned that the baby will soon appear, future parents are often in a state of confusion, and some even decide to give the pet in good hands, for fear of possible difficulties. In fact, this measure is extreme. But if a pet already lives in the house, it should be prepared for the appearance of a new family member. Prospective parents should understand that a small child and any animal (even the most sweet and harmless) are dangerous for each other.
First of all, evaluate the habitat of the pet: if it is a bird, rodent, fish or other animal living in a confined space, its house should be taken out of the room in which the crib will stand. Place the cage / aquarium / terrarium on a level inaccessible to the child. A bit more complicated is the situation with a dog, a cat or other animals moving freely around the house. The most important thing in this case - to wean the pet to sleep in the same bed with the owner, climb the table. It is also important that the animal was not aggressive - try personally to pull the pet by the ears, tail and evaluate its reaction.
Animals and children can become best friends if the elders educate each of them correctly. Toddler should be taught to adequately treat animals. Tell us how you can behave with your pet, do not disregard the moment if the child is cruel. Avoid categorical prohibitions - do not be lazy every time to explain that these actions hurt the animal and can harm its health. Be sure to involve the child in pet care. Let him and wakes up food or filler for the toilet, but over time he will manage to perform all the necessary manipulations no worse than yours. Caring for an animal develops a sense of responsibility and other positive qualities.
The child is asking for an animal ...
The day when a daughter or son comes to parents with a request to purchase / take some kind of pet comes in the life of any family. How to respond to such persuasion? Refuse immediately not worth it. First of all, answer yourself - are you ready for the appearance of an animal in the house? If you do not like this idea, try to argue specifically. It is no secret that many thoroughbred and exotic animals today are quite expensive. If this is the main reason for the apparent failure, explain to the child, suggest waiting until a major holiday, accumulating personal pocket money (if any) or refusing to buy a new computer / expensive toy. The maintenance of many animals is associated with certain difficulties (these are loud sounds, damage to household goods and furniture, extra rubbish in the apartment). Most problems can be solved by proper parenting. A trained dog will not tear wallpaper, cats are easily accustomed to the toilet, and if the rodents' cells are cleaned regularly, there will be no unpleasant smell. Discuss with your child in advance all the characteristics of the animal and make sure that he wants to take care of himself.
How to reach a compromise?
Often, children ask their parents for something completely impossible. But even in this situation, any request and desire should be discussed in detail. If you are ready to have a pet, but you are not satisfied with the specific choice of the child, offer a decent alternative. Try to explain that purebred cats are no less affectionate and beautiful than kittens born to champions. A large dog should not be wound up in a small city apartment, but fish or a parrot is quite possible. Animals and children should feel comfortable next to each other. Poisonous snakes and spiders, as well as furry owners of sharp claws and teeth - this is not the best company for preschoolers or elementary school students.
Choosing the right pet
What animal to buy for a child? It is necessary to focus primarily on the wishes of the beloved child. If the desire to simply have a “living creature in the house” comes to the fore, you can go with your whole family to some kind of exhibition or to a small contact zoo. A good place for an excursion is a large pet store. The general rules of choice are simple: animals and children should not be dangerous for each other. Refuse to buy poisonous exotic animals, aggressive breeds of dogs and cats. It is not necessary to acquire a pet that requires complex care and special conditions. Remember, grief from the loss of a pet immediately overshadow the joy of its acquisition.
Animals for children 3-5 years
To acquire a pet for a child of 2 years does not make sense. But in 3-4 years in front of you already growing up personality, quite capable of becoming a real owner. In addition to the universal for all ages cats and dogs, good pets for children 4 years old are: birds, large rodents, fish. Parents should understand that adults will have to take care of the purchase. In addition, older family members should constantly monitor the child and, if possible, do not leave him alone with the pet. Do not be afraid, over time, the daughter or son will be happy to help, perhaps, and will independently take care of the animal on its own.
Pets for children 6 years and older
If your child is preparing to go to the first grade, you can choose an animal according to the wishes and possibilities of the family. Even before acquiring a pet, discuss with the future owner his duties. At the age of 6, children can be trusted with not only feeding, but also cleaning the cage / toilet, washing bowls and drinking bowls, even walking small dogs on the street. But even in this case it will be better if the child communicates with the pet under the supervision of someone from the elders. A good animal for a 6 year old child is a bird. You can also get fish or amphibians, any rodents.
How do animals affect children?
With proper preparation of the child, the appearance of a pet in the house is always a joy. Very often dogs, bought for children, become the favorites of all the closest relatives of the family and neighbors. No less joy can bring and turtles or hamsters. It is important to understand that, having received an animal as a gift, the child becomes the owner, i.e., someone older and more important. It is important to explain to your daughter or son that without constant care and attention, any living thing will quickly become sick and may die.
It is useful to develop similar behavior from early childhood. Even street cats for children should not be just toys or "wild animals", but first and foremost living beings. If you regularly drive a child to the zoo, together to feed stray animals and street birds, it is not at all difficult to develop qualities such as kindness, compassion, and responsiveness. Own pet also teaches responsibility, awakens selfless love and the ability to empathize.
Pet - a family member, not a toy!
If you are afraid that newly acquired domestic turtles will quickly annoy your child, do not be lazy to regularly stimulate his interest in animals. Read together about your pet, watch documentaries. If possible, play with a pet, try to perform some tricks. The first line in the ranking of pets, forgotten by young owners after purchase, is occupied by fish in an aquarium. But even they can be engaged indefinitely. Fish can not be taken for a walk or fully included in the game. But then you can always change the interior in the aquarium, get new tenants and plants. Do not forget to give the names of the fish, invent interesting stories about them and find new facts about the rocks that you live. Similarly, you can include in the family life and any other pets.
Cats, dogs, or Animals having their own territory
Any living creature has its own character and personality. When it comes to animals, do not forget about the instincts. There is an opinion that small dogs are very aggressive, Persian cats are capricious, and rats are distinguished by intelligence and ingenuity. Of course, there are exceptions to any rule, but if you buy an animal as a gift to a child, the choice should be made on a species / breed with a good reputation. Consider the physiological features, for example, turtles sleep too much, and the fish in the aquarium require very complex care, following a whole list of rules for each particular species. Regardless of which pet you choose, start by gathering information about this breed and species. And only after that go to get acquainted with a particular individual to the breeder.
Do not forget that our smaller brothers are able to carry diseases that are dangerous to humans. You can reduce the likelihood of a domestic epidemic by regularly visiting a veterinarian and observing simple hygienic rules. Wash your hands after each contact with the animal, clean the toilet carefully and in a timely manner, do not be lazy to comb out wool and so on.
Remember that cats for children are not only best friends, but also a living allergen. Unfortunately, many people learn about hair allergies only after they get a pet. Caution should communicate with animals in pregnant women. The disease "toxoplasmosis" can be obtained "as a gift" from a pet: small dogs can be carriers, but from cats it is very easy to get infected. The precautionary rules are simple: a pregnant woman should not clean the cat's toilet by herself, feed the animal with raw meat. If you follow basic sanitary and hygienic rules and do not forget to visit the vet regularly, serious problems will never affect your family. Do not forget that any pet is alive. Get ready for the fact that, like any other bird, a parrot will make loud sounds, a cat or a dog may scratch or bite if it is not properly treated, and rodents do not smell very good if you stop cleaning their cage.
