Chinese trionyx is one of the most famous specimens of soft turtles. This is a small freshwater creature that terrumists greatly appreciate for its lovely appearance. Far Eastern amphibian does not require certain conditions of care. Most of the life of a bug is under water (can stay there for up to 15 hours). It is able to inhale oxygen from both water and air.
In the natural environment, trionix lives in freshwater lakes, rivers and reservoirs, where the prevailing conditions are sloping shores, a weak current and a sandy bottom. The activity of the tortoise manifests itself at night, and in the daytime it rests. This Chinese creature has an excellent speed response - it moves quickly in water and on land. And that is why in the wild it is very difficult to catch her.
Like all turtles, the Chinese Far Eastern trionix has an oval-shaped shell with a length of 30-40 cm, but unlike other varieties, it is not so hard, because it does not have hard horny plates. The color of the shell of these amphibians is brownish-green, with small yellow spots, the lower part of the body is of sandy color, the head is small.
The eyes of the turtles are a little bulging, they are of different colors. From the shell comes a thin oblong neck. Compared to females, males have a longer striped tail (after three years). In females, it remains short. Each limb of the trionix has five fingers. One of the qualities of the appearance of a turtle is the trunk with nostrils. She can even get them to the tail. Amphibian weighs no more than 4 kg.
The turtles of this breed live in Taiwan, in Japan, on the Hainan Islands, in northeastern China, Korea and Vietnam. Most likely, these seafarers were brought to Hawaii by seafarers who consumed them as food. In Russia, turtles spread in the Southern Amur and in Primorye.
Chinese trionyx lives in large and small rivers and lakes on a muddy bottom. The shores should be sloping, with strong vegetation. On the coast, turtles crawl out in order to soak up the sun, and their water protects them from dangers, and there they feed. In the autumn, these creatures burrow into the mud, where they spend the whole winter, and they are already awakening by May-June.
Choose sufficiently heated reservoirs with a sandy bottom and sparse plant world. Do not tolerate rivers with fast flowing. In the intense heat, the Far Eastern tortoise hides in wet sand or goes into the water. If a threat appears, the amphibian will immediately crawl away into the bottom sludge. These wonderful creatures can warm up not only on the banks, but also burrow into the ground aground near the water line. When needed, they are dug up and disappear in depth.
Existence under water
Most of the time, the Chinese trionix spends in the water, dives perfectly, swims. The turtle is adapted to take a portion of oxygen from the water with the help of pharyngeal breathing In the throat of an amphibian there are bundles of villous growths of the mucous membrane, covered by a mass of blood vessels, and here is the ingestion of air directly from the liquid. Under the water, the Chinese turtle opens its mouth so that the liquid can wash the hairs in the larynx. The purer the water in a river, the less the mouth of the trionyx immersed in it opens.
The Far Eastern tortoise can extend an oblong neck into the distance to inhale the air. This gives her the opportunity not to rise to the surface of the water and remain inconspicuous to predators - it is just worth showing the proboscis out of the water. Despite such an adaptation to aquatic life, an amphibian is able to remarkably run on the ground. In particular, young trionics move quickly. Photos of turtles are presented below.
Caught a turtle behaves very hostile, trying to grab the hand, and its long neck makes it possible to reach the rear of the carapace. The bites of even tiny turtles can be very painful, large specimens can inflict quite severe injuries with their sharp teeth on the horny jaw.
What feeds on
Chinese trionics are predators and eat worms, fish, insects, amphibians, mollusks and crustaceans. Waiting for prey in ambush, hiding in the mud or in the sand, and grab the approaching victim with a sudden movement of the head. The greatest food activity is seen at night or at dusk. During this period, the Chinese trionix does not hide in ambush and can vigorously hunt, vigorously surveying its territory and looking for food at the bottom of the lake. If a large fish is caught, the tortoise does not immediately swallow it, but at first bites off its head.
Puberty in turtles begins with the sixth year of life. They mate from March to April, and eggs are laid in May and until the end of August. Particularly active their action since mid-June. Trionix digs an oval hole at a depth of 15-20 cm and a diameter of 8-10 cm at a distance of 10-35 m from the water, covering it with grass. Eggs in the nest lie together or in 2-3 rows. Females lay from 20 to 70 eggs 2-3 times during the summer period. Their eggs are covered with white shell, have an oval shape with a diameter of 17-23 mm and a weight of 5 g. The duration of breeding at a temperature of 28-30 degrees is 40-60 days. The size of newborn creatures is about 30 mm. Photos of turtles are presented below.
Chinese turtle at home
It is better to keep such mobile amphibians in a large aquarium and preferably with a lid, since turtles often run away. The island with the land is necessary for them exclusively for laying eggs. The trionixes themselves almost never climb it.
Turtles living in aquaterrarium need a uniform water temperature of 20-26 degrees. They are very picky about sunlight and high temperatures. Ground sand or small rocks, which must be present in the aquarium, play the role of an escape shelter for an amphibian.
The soil also reduces hostility. The height of the layer is 10-15 cm. The Chinese trionyx turtle rarely creeps out of the water in the daytime, but likes to soak up the sun, sticking a muzzle from it. The scale of the aquaterrarium should be at least 60 liters, it all depends on the size of the amphibian. Bright lighting annoys him.
Aeration in an aquarium of a Far Eastern tortoise is necessary, as it breathes in not only ordinary air, but also that which is dissolved in water. She breathes this air with the help of special hairs in the depths of the larynx. This allows the trionix to be under water for a long time.
Don't get along with anyone
Chinese trions are considered predators and hermits. They should not be kept with other non-forage animals, since conflicts can occur between individuals, leading to serious consequences with serious injuries, loss of limbs and even death. Giving food to a turtle is only necessary in isolation from other creatures.
How to handle
To communicate with adult specimens should be only in special gloves. They need to take exclusively for the back of the shell. They have an elastic and oblong neck, which is well arched, and this gives the turtle a resourcefulness to bite.
If the trionyx is still inflicted a wound, then in no way should it be delayed. It is simply best to lower the turtle into the aquarium, and she will immediately unhook. There were cases when the amphibian did not want to let go of the hand, it was necessary to open the mouth with an additional iron scoop, sticking it from the side.
Mature individuals caught in captivity retain their anger and wildness, but the young turtles easily get used to eating from their hands, although they are different hostile in nature too.
In Japan and China, trionics are caught and eaten, their meat is very much appreciated. Most often amphibians are caught on a prison or on a fishing tackle. Turtle eggs are also edible. There are even some Japanese monasteries where Far Eastern creatures are kept in lakes as sacred animals. The Chinese Trionix turtle also got into the Red Book. The price of the specimen in eastern countries is low - about $ 10.
Drying is very harmful for an amphibian. As much as possible he can stay on land no more than two hours.
What to feed
In terms of nutrition, the trions are completely undemanding and eat various animal food. Young creatures can be fed:
- insects (flour worms, cockroaches, crickets);
- small aquarium fish;
- big daphnia;
Adult turtles with hunting eat:
- sea and shallow freshwater fish;
- offal (liver and heart);
- rat pups;
- pieces of meat;
Only sometimes trionixes can eat vegetable products: bananas, lettuce and cabbage. From time to time with food it is necessary to give vitamins and mineral supplements to turtles.
