How to make a knife cover for yourself
Many hunters know that cleaning a knife is much more difficult than extracting it. Therefore, most of them very responsibly approach the choice of scabbards. However, some newcomers do not know how to properly choose a knife cover.
A Brief Historical Reference
The history of the sheath's work began in the 13th century. At that time, they were popular not only in men, but also in women. Already in those days, the universal knife was used with equal success both for cooking and hunting. In addition, he was considered an indispensable attribute of the equipment of valiant warriors.
In that era, especially popular were the covers for knives made of leather. The inner side of such scabbards was called mezdra, and the outer one was considered facial. To enhance water-repellent properties, the surface of the dressed skin was covered with a special protective layer consisting of oil and fats. Before making a knife cover, our distant ancestors chose a piece of calfskin leather, the thickness of which was only two millimeters. During the archaeological excavations, scientists were able to find the sheath made of cowhide, sheepskin and sheep skin.
What to look for when buying?
When choosing a knife cover, it is necessary to pay special attention to the material from which it is made. Because of its quality depends on the life of the scabbard. Do not discount the fact that the copy you like is convenient. Ideally, the knife should be easily removed from the cover. The mouth of the scabbard should not be unnecessarily narrow, not too wide.
When buying a knife cover, you should pay attention to what and how it is attached. It should not have complicated locks and fasteners. Quality sheaths are produced not only from leather, but also from wood, covered with this very skin. In the selection process, it is recommended to consider the type of knife that will be stored in them. For small ones leather suits are ideally suited, and for large hunting knives - wooden.
How to make scabbards for medium and large hunting knives?
Unfortunately, not all stores can find a suitable case. Those who failed to do this should not be upset. After all, you can make a knife cover with your own hands. To do this, it is necessary to stock up in advance with a piece of thick felt, a leather belt, a laminated plywood, an epoxy resin with hardener, lavsan threads, emery and a file.
From the stratified plywood, two plates should be cut out, the shape of which is identical to the blade of the knife. The size of the obtained blanks should slightly exceed the dimensions of the blade itself. The surface of both plates must be treated with epoxy resin with hardener. Top should be glued in advance cut out felt. After the adhesive has completely dried, it is possible to trim the excess felt. Then you need to take both blanks and attach them to each other so that the felt part is inside. Then, using an epoxy resin, a loop from a leather belt is glued. Plate sheath is processed with epoxy resin and immediately densely wrapped with lavsan threads. After waiting for the glue to grab the thread and the plywood, you can apply a fresh layer of resin and wrap another layer of thread. To achieve greater strength, it is recommended to make at least four such layers.
After the resin has completely hardened, it is possible to start grinding the sheath. You can give them the desired shape using a file and sandpaper. In order for the finished product to take on an aesthetic appearance, it should be dyed or taped.
How to make a knife for a knife from PVC?
To produce such scabbards, it is necessary to stock up with a sharp knife, an industrial hair dryer and a piece of PVC pipe widely used in plumbing. The latter can be purchased at any construction store. The manufacture of such sheaths will take no more than half an hour.
First of all, it is necessary to cut a piece of pipe of the required length. Having made a longitudinal cut on the pipe, it needs to be softened with the help of an industrial hair dryer. After that, the flexible plastic can be folded into a sheath. Surplus is cut with a sharp knife.
After this, it is necessary to put a knife in the cover and heat the plastic again in the area of the handle. In the softened material, you can easily make a comfortable notch under the handle. To fasten the scabbards, several holes must be made along the seam line for screw connections or rivets. At the final stage, you need to make a belt clip. It is desirable to cut it out of a piece of genuine leather. A belt clip is attached to the scabbard using rivets.
