Every pet owner needs to know what deworming is. This necessary measure is associated with the health and well-being of not only pets, but also a person. But what kind of procedure is this, how often should one address it, and what subtleties should be taken into account when carrying out this therapeutic process?
What is deworming?
This procedure is familiar to many since childhood, since it is carried out not only for animals, but also for humans. Deworming is a set of actions aimed at destroying or expelling parasitic worms from the body. Helminth, or other, more common name, worm, is of different species, some of them parasitize only in the animal's body, others are equally dangerous for the pet and for the host. This type of procedure is usually divided into two: preventive and curative. To prevent the disease, each host can independently perform de-worming. But the treatment procedure is better to entrust to the veterinarian, they have a developed plan of measures, a sparing pet.
How does the infection occur?
Deworming is an important measure not only for the animal, but also for the person. The statistics show that every second inhabitant gets helminths every year. There are three main types that can parasitize in human organs. These are nematodes, or round worms, cestodes, or banded helminths, and flat worms. It is not for nothing that we are told since childhood that it is important to wash your hands constantly. Infection occurs when you contact the animal, but not only. The larvae are found on public objects, such as handrails, handrails, pens, money, etc. The pet itself becomes infected mainly through food, feces of other animals, waste; puppies are from the mother.
Why it is important to conduct deworming
Often owners of pets are sure that there are no worms in the body of the animal, as they were not seen in the excrement. But the facts show that about 80% of the well-groomed domestic animals are infected with these parasites. The disease initially does not produce any visible signs, and if some symptoms appear, they are usually confused with other ailments, but not with the activity of helminths. To learn from external signs about the presence of parasites is rather difficult, because the immune system tries to fight this problem for a long time. Struggle comes to an end and signs become obvious only when the organism weakens and helminths increase in number. By this time, the behavior of the pet changes, inflammation occurs or the coat becomes not the same as before. In young animals growth slows down. In these cases, urgent de-worming is required, this can save the animal's life. It is necessary to conduct the procedure in a veterinary hospital. But to prevent the problem and learn about it in advance is possible, if you pass the tests in the clinic.
Subtlety of preventive de-worming
This type of procedure is carried out in two cases. Sometimes an infected beast is kept in the company of other pets. In this case, the patient is treated and at the same time preventive de-worming of animals contacting the carrier is organized.
Another kind is a routine procedure that is performed every spring and autumn. But prevention can be done more often if the animal goes hunting, feeds on raw foods (meat and fish), is inclined to pick up waste and lick feces of other animals. In these circumstances, the prevention of the disease is organized once a quarter. Two weeks after de-worming, another vaccination is carried out.
If the female is pregnant or is breastfeeding, prevention is not done. The procedure is performed two weeks before the planned mating. If this treatment has not been carried out, it is necessary to wait for delivery, after which, after three weeks, deworming is done for the already grown offspring and mother.
It is worth remembering that human de-worming differs from that performed by animals, so it is not allowed to give to your pet tablets intended for humans. It is also important to avoid buying drugs in tents, markets and other precarious places, since it is possible to get a fake and damage the pet. For this purpose, a special drug is purchased in veterinary pharmacies, stores or clinics. It can be drops on the withers, suspensions or tablets. For example, you can use the preparations Kanikvantel, Drontal, Tsestal and others. In addition, funds are produced that exert a complex effect on both ectoparasites and helminths, such as "Inspector" or "Stronghold" medicines.
But with self-treatment it is worth to be very careful, because for animals of each kind there should be not only different dosages. Usually, the drugs themselves are specially designed for dogs, rodents, cats. Even for puppies and adult dogs, there must be different approaches to deworming. Always take into account the mass of the animal, and before the procedure it must be weighed. Prophylaxis is performed on the indicated date once during the first morning feeding. Strictly control the dosage! If an animal has fleas, after de-worming, they can provoke a second infection. Therefore, it is extremely important to get rid of these ectoparasites.
Medical deworming at home
When helminthes are detected (this can be determined by passing a stool analysis), the procedure is repeated twice. But each time the drug is given clearly according to the instructions, taking into account the exact weight of the animal. The first morning reception of the drug will kill adult parasites, while the larvae remain intact, they will ripen on the tenth day. Therefore, after 14 days the drug is given again, observing the dosage. Sometimes such a procedure can not change the situation, and parasites still remain in the body. In this case it is better to ask for specialist help. It should be noted that if the worms can be seen with the naked eye in the faeces of an animal, it is better not to engage in self-medication, but without delay, turn to the veterinarian. If the pet is sick with parasitic worms, most likely, it will be necessary to de-worming the person.
