What is an officer line
The officer line is a special device designed for the work of an officer. It is made, as a rule, from transparent plastic, it looks like a rectangle with various slots. Depending on this or that kind, patterns, stencils, protractor, divisions for measuring distances or angles can be placed on it, for applying conventional signs, for example, on topographic maps.
Use the officer's ruler, the photo of which you see above, mainly for orientation on the map, to determine more precise coordinates. In addition, with it, you can easily measure angles, draw shapes, fonts and numbers.
Any line of officers is a versatile working tool that combines a variety of drawing devices. It is mainly used for measurements (for example, on maps and plans), convenient application of such conventional signs on working papers as forbidden zones, flooding zones or fires, areas of radiation, biological or chemical contamination, deployment of all kinds of weapons and equipment . Also, the officer line allows you to mark on the maps roads, colonial paths and special routes. In addition, it can create any graphic images, plans and diagrams.
Any line of officers includes (in addition to such a simple measuring geometric tool as a ruler) scale scale, a protractor with a millimeter double-sided scale scale and stencils. In addition, it is necessarily present special inscriptions and images, as well as a variety of geometric shapes. For example, it can be rectangles, circles, triangles, squares and ovals.
At the present time, it is common to distinguish two main types of a similar product: the officer's naval line and the land line. The first is designed to simplify and accelerate the laying of the way of various vessels. Such a tool easily replaces the commonly used protractor and parallel ruler. In addition, it allows officers to dispense with compass adjustments without performing the necessary calculations. Thus, it is possible to eliminate the possibility of calculating errors.
And finally, this simplest counting and solving mechanism makes it possible to "remember" the deviation table, as well as the course followed by the vessel, and the corresponding corrections in this course.
As for the officer's land line, in addition to drawing standard geometric figures and symbols, it allows making designations such as cannon (field gun, howitzer), machine gun (manual, easel), parachute (landing), communication station and observation post. Details of all the signs on this instrument, which depending on the drawings inside and out can change their meaning, are described in a special methodology called "Commander's work card".
